First Responder

The course includes First Aid & CPR Guidelines 2005 and meets Federal regulations and a variety of provincial/territorial regulations for Advanced First Aid. This course is designed to teach First Responders advanced first aid techniques including how to sustain life and prevent further injuries until advanced medical personnel arrive. The consequences of further injury are also explored.

Course Details:

  • 40–44 hours with flexible scheduling options
  • 3-year certification in First Responder
  • Includes CPR Level HCP
  • Includes AED (Automated External Defibrillation) certification
  • Conducted by a certified Red Cross First Responder Instructor or Emergency Medical Responder Instructor

Prerequisites:
CPR/AED Level C is mandatory, but it is recommended that participants have completed a Standard First Aid + CPR/AED course.

Course Content:
A big focus of the course is on advanced first aid equipment including:

  • Oral Airways
  • Oxygen Administration
  • Automated External Defibrillators
  • Measuring Blood Pressure
  • Spinals - including boarding, cervical collars and helmet removal
  • KED application (Kendrick Extrication Device)
  • Traction Splints (Sager Traction Splint)

The course also teaches about serious injuries including:

  • Respiratory Emergencies
  • Cardiac Emergencies (CPR-HCP)
  • Deadly Bleeding and Shock
  • Injuries to the Chest, Abdomen and Pelvis
  • Special Populations and Crisis Intervention
  • Childbirth Multiple Casualty Incidents

Emergency Medical Responder

This course includes First Aid & CPR Guidelines 2005 and meets OHS regulations for Advanced First Aid. The course is designed to meet the National Occupational Competency Profiles for the practitioner level of Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) established by the Paramedic Association of Canada (PAC). It provides the knowledge and skills necessary in an emergency to help sustain life, reduce pain, and minimize the consequences of injury or sudden illness until the next level of health care takes over.

Course Details:

  • 75–80 hour course with flexible scheduling options
  • Includes CPR Level HCP
  • Includes AED (Automated External Defibrillation) certification (where local legislation permits)
  • Conducted by a certified Red Cross Emergency Medical Responder Instructor

Prerequisites:
CPR/AED Level C is mandatory, but it is recommended that participants have completed a Standard First Aid + CPR/AED course. Those doing an upgrade to the EMR level must have a current Red Cross First Responder. Recommended for those in emergency response, including Firefighters, Police, EMS personnel, OPT (or equivalent) personnel and workplace response teams.

Oxygen Administration & Airway Management

The course covers how to use medical grade oxygen, oropharyngeal airways and suction devices. Participants also learn how to treat a variety of respiratory emergencies.

  • 3-year certification in First Responder
  • Conducted by a certified Red Cross First Responder Instructor or Emergency Medical Responder Instructor

Participants must hold CPR/AED Level C or HCP
